Freddie Mercury: Roger Taylor shares how he would unburden the Queen singer at live shows | Music | Entertainment

Freddie Mercury is known for being one of rock’s greatest singers, but even someone as talented as him could struggle with the vocals sometimes. In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Queen drummer Roger Taylor shared how he would sometimes unburden the singer from high notes during live performances. The 71-year-old said: “In our live shows Freddie and I used to often swap notes.

Roger Taylor continued: “He had so much singing to do sometimes I could take the burden of some of the high notes off him.

“So we would swap. He’d go under and I’d go over. We did a lot of that. I don’t think people realised half the time.”

If you go back and listen to some of Queen’s early work fans will find that occasionally Roger or Brian May would be the lead singer on some tracks instead of Freddie.

The Queen drummer admitted: “I still meet people who go, ‘Oh do you sing?’”

Roger added: “And I go, ‘I b****y well sung all along. Queen were quite good at harmonies, but you probably never noticed.’

“I get a lot of that now. ‘I didn’t know you sang!’, ‘Yeah of course I do it’s part of my job!’”

During an interview with us last year, the 71-year-old said of Freddie Mercury: “He had quite an extraordinary voice and he just got better and better and better. The thing is, with Queen we have three singers really.

“A lot of people sort of forget that we had harmonies obviously. In a sense, the three of us, Brian, myself and Freddie, always sang a lot.”

Roger will be mainly singing and playing the drums for the 14 shows across the nation.

The 71-year-old even promises he will perform some of the Queen hits he wrote himself.

Asked about which ones, he replied: “Probably obvious ones like Radio Ga Ga, A Kind of Magic and These Are The Days Of Our Lives. More of the ones I wrote because that makes more sense I think.”
