The Earl of Wessex said the job “just carries on relentlessly.”

He added that both he and his wife felt it was important to support the Queen in her time of need.

The 95-year-old Monarch has attended royal engagements and held meetings almost every day since the official mourning period for her late husband ended in April.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Her Majesty has mostly been holding virtual audiences, but she did step out for both the State opening of Parliament on May 11 and shook hands with the crew of her namesake ship, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, on May 22.

Sophie continued: “Inevitably the spotlight and the focus falls on younger members as time goes on.

“We’ve plodded along doing what we’re doing, hopefully doing it well.

“And then all of a sudden there’s a bit of a hiatus and things have changed a bit.

“Naturally, the media are looking for people to fill the so-called void. But you know, we have been doing this for what feels like a pretty long time.
