State pension age is rising: How to check state pension age | Personal Finance | Finance

[ad_1]

The state pension age is currently rising, with it set to reach 66 for men and women in October 2020. This is ahead of further increases, with changes meaning it’s due to increase to 67, and then 68, based on current law.

In the past, the state pension age was 60 for women and 65 for men.

Under the Pensions Act 1995 and the Pensions Act 2011, the state pension age for women increase, reaching 65 in line with men in November 2018.

Now, the state pension age is increasing, meaning some people may reach their state pension age later than others have done in the past.

Amid the changes, some people may wonder when they will reach their state pension age.

The timetable of the increases have been published by the government, and these can be found online.

It’s also possible to check what a person’s state pension age is online, via the “Check your State Pension age” tool at Gov.uk.

This service can be used to find out when they will reach state pension age, as well as Pension Credit qualifying age.

It can also be used to see when they will be eligible for free bus travel.

DON’T MISS

In order to use the tool, the user needs to declare whether they would like to calculate their state pension age – including Pension Credit qualifying age – or their bus pass age.

They then need to enter their date of birth, as well as state whether they’re classes as a man or a woman.

The service will then tell the user when they reached state pension age, and what their state pension age is.

It will also detail whether they have reached Pension Credit qualifying age, and if they haven’t, when this would be.

For checking bus pass age, the user needs to enter their date of birth.

The tool then says the date on which they qualify for a bus pass, if they live in England.

It also explains that the date a person qualifies for a bus pass is when they turn 60 years old, if they live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

The dates may differ in some areas, gov.uk adds, and a person can check with their council as to when they can apply for a bus pass.

It also notes that a person can get a 60+ Oyster card from Transport for London for use in London, if they live in Greater London.

Otherwise, those in England can get a bus pass for free travel when they reach the female state pension age, and this is whether they are a man or a woman.

The “Check your State Pension” tool is a different online service, and this provides a state pension forecast.

It also states when a person can get the state pension, and how to increase it, if they can.
