The Beatles: Paul McCartney almost ruined band’s first Brian Epstein meeting | Music | Entertainment

While The Beatles were still living in Liverpool they performed at the city’s famous Cavern Club almost daily. The band would get on stage around midday every day, allowing teenagers to watch Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Pete Best hit the stage while on their lunch break. During one of these gigs, local entrepreneur Brian Epstein attended, prompting him to introduce himself to the young stars.

The record store owner decided he liked what he was hearing from the band, so set up a meeting with them for a few days later.

This event was the first-ever business meeting The Beatles were involved in and were not quite sure what was going to happen next.

As revealed in Liverpool’s museum, The Beatles Story, the band were not taking the meeting very seriously.

Before the band met Epstein at his record store, NEMS (North End Music Stores), they decided to attend the local pub, The Grapes.

Lennon, Harrison and Best all arrived a little late after having a few drinks at the pub.

Epstein wasn’t best pleased and said in a voice clip at the museum he “was appalled” by their decorum.

The producer then went on to ask the three members of the band where McCartney was.

Harrison responded that McCartney had only just woken up and was currently “taking a bath”.

While the Fab Four were known for their slicked-back hair, leather jackets and boots at the time, Epstein decided to give them a makeover.

He was the inspiration behind putting each of them in matching dark suits, making them stand out as businesslike folk.

Of course, his efforts were successful as the band went on to become one of the biggest bands of all time.

Epstein managed the band until his untimely death in 1967.

Epstein died of a drug overdose, which was ruled as accidental.

He was 32-years-old, but his legacy lived on as one of the founding members of the band.

McCartney has said in the past: “If anyone [were] the fifth Beatle, it was Brian.”
