Love and dating are the areas of your life that can take the biggest hit from having zero body confidence. If Instagram posts of people showing off their rolls and stretch marks aren’t helping you learn to accept your body, there are a few simple hacks that could change your mindset. Express.co.uk chatted to dating coach from Ignite Dating, Michelle Begy, to find out how to love your body no matter your relationship status.
According to dating coach Michelle, if you lack self-confidence you could be putting barriers in the way of your happy ever after.
This is true of all aspects of life, not just dating. From fashion choices to career moves, how you feel in your body is a real game-changer.
Michelle said: “Everyone has moments of self-doubt where we do not feel comfortable with our bodies and how we look and often this can be amplified under the pressure of big events like getting ready for that first date and wanting to make the right first impression.”

Choose comfort over glamour
High heels, a fitted dress and a slim but curvy figure is most people’s idea of glamour and sexiness.
If you feel comfortable in this sort of outfit and it makes you feel good about your body, wear it.
However, comfort is key if you’re trying to lose your inhibitions when it comes to your body confidence.
Michelle said: “I’m not suggesting that you throw all rules aside and rock up to date in your gym gear, but when it comes to that first date pick something comfortable to wear that you feel good in.
“While the thought of a new dress or new shirt may seem like a good idea, sometimes old favourites are the better option.
“You can run the risk of the dress wearing you, rather than you wearing the dress!
“After all, if you wear something new that you are uncomfortable with on your date, it will show in your body language and can sometimes be misread as signs that you are not interested in your date – which could be miles from the truth.”
If you’re not dating, this rule applies every single day – toss clothing that doesn’t fit or suit you out of your wardrobe and never look back!

Highlight your best bits
If you’re dating or simply looking to boost your confidence, make sure you draw attention to your favourite features.
Michelle said: “Maybe you’re always complimented on your smile or your eyes, pick a part of your body that you like and highlight it.
“By drawing attention to the parts that you like you will forget those areas that you are not so comfortable with and that confidence in the best bits will shine through.
“Remember the vital rule, legs or chest, never both!”
This is the perfect rule to live by no matter your relationship status or plans.
Change the way you talk to yourself
Negative self-talk is a big no-no!
Michelle explained: “We live in a world where tearing people down and telling them that they are not good or pretty enough is commonplace, so it’s up to you to make sure that you fill your thoughts with positivity.”
It’s bad enough to insult yourself in private, but it’s just as detrimental if you’re going on a date or around your partner.
Michelle said: “Before a date, give yourself a little pep talk. Remind yourself of all the things that you love about yourself and have to offer a potential partner.
“This positive mindset will make such a difference to your confidence.”
Make time for yourself
You need to take care of yourself and do things that make you feel well-rested and relaxed in order to improve your confidence.
Michelle said: “Taking as little as five minutes out of your day to focus on some me-time can make such a difference to your mental health.
“Whether you choose to go for a long soak in the bath, head to the gym for a session or switch off from the stresses of everyday life with a good book or film, it will give you a renewed focus and when you’re feeling good on the inside it will show on the outside.”
Fake it until you make it
You’ve heard the saying ‘fake it until you make it’ before and it’s legit advice.
Michelle said: “Faking it until you make it can be vital when it comes to body confidence, especially in dating.
“Picture that body confident person who is self-assured and full of self-love and owns the role.
“You’ll soon find that if you fake it long enough you will genuinely start to believe it and it will be a complete transformation for your dating journey.”
