Tesco UK: Supermarket launches first stores without checkouts – what to know

[ad_1]

Tesco will launch it’s first checkout-free store following a successful trial. This will allow customers to pay for shopping without needing to use checkouts.

Instead of queueing at checkouts, those visiting stores will simply scan items as they go.

When they leave, they will be automatically charged only for the items they are taking.

This follows in the footsteps of Amazon Fresh stores which have opened across the country.

These are also tillless and have proved popular with many shoppers.

DON’T MISS

Chief executive Ken Murphy commented on the changes and explained the concept is in the early stages.

“We have a system installed in our Express store in Welwyn Garden City (at head office),” he said.

“And we’ll extend that to another store in the coming weeks and months to check it in a more urban environment.

“It’s been opened about a year now, and it’s working really well.

Some shoppers will be able to get double points for three months as the retailer trials Clubcard Pay.

This is Tesco Bank’s new prepaid debit card which is available for current and new Clubcard members.

The debit card can be pre-loaded with cash from another bank account.

Shoppers can treat it as a normal debit card and it can be used for spending in shops and online and to make withdrawals.
