She said: “What’s the communication? I now really don’t understand the rules even though I read them because it’s one rule for them and the rest of it for us.

“Are we really going to get rid of all the marvellous benefits we’ve had from our fantastic vaccine programme by squandering it?”

On Tuesday, the Government announced that over 60,0000 football fans would be allowed to enter Wembley stadium for the final and semi-final matches.

Supporters will only be allowed entry into the arena if they show a negative Covid test or proof of double vaccination.

Also speaking on the show, Jon Ashworth, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary and Social Care Secretary, said he couldn’t see how the UEFA VIPs could get around the UK’s Covid rules.

He said: “I cannot see how it can be possibly justified that UEFA VIPs, sponsors and so on can get around these quarantine rules and go and watch the final at Wembley.

“Fans should be able to go watch the final at Wembley and there will be, no doubt, a testing regime in place.”

He added that negotiations with UEFA will continue to discuss what will happen if the VIPs are not allowed into the country for the event.

Show host Fiona Bruce asked Mr Buckland what he thought might be the Government’s rationale.

He responded: “I think the rationale is putting it absolutely straight that we want to attract a major international football tournament to the UK and I think that they bring a lot of joy.

“They also bring, frankly, a lot of revenue for our businesses and our industries across the country and therefore it is right that we do try and play on that stage.”

The Euro 2020 final is on July 11.
