Demi Lovato says it’s okay that people mistakenly mis-gender them – as long as they try to get it right | Ents & Arts News

Demi Lovato has told fans that it is okay if they mis-gender them, as long as they have good intentions and try their best.

The Sorry Not Sorry singer came out as non-binary earlier in the year and changed their pronouns to they/them.

Those who are non-binary feel as if they do not quite fit into the gender binaries of being a man or woman, and may decide to identify outside the confines of the gender binary.

However, non-binary identities vary and while some people may decide to reject the binary of being a man or woman, others may identify with certain aspects of it.

Writing on Twitter, the 28-year-old said: “I felt the need to post this because I often find that the change in pronouns can be confusing for some, and difficult to remember for others.

“It’s all about your intention. It’s important to me that you try, but if you make a mistake, it’s okay”.

They added: “If you mis-gender me – that’s okay. I accidently mis-gender myself sometimes! It’s a huge transition to change the pronouns I’ve used for myself my entire life.

“And it’s difficultlt to remember sometimes!

“As long as you keep trying to respect my truth, and as long as I remember my truth, the shift will come naturally.”

They also thanked fans for the effort they put into remembering their pronouns, saying it helps their “healing process”.

Lovato shot to fame in the Disney Channel film Camp Rock alongside the Jonas Brothers, and has since gone on to have a hugely successful career.

Earlier this year, Lovato revealed they were raped at the age of 15 while working for Disney, as well as admitting they had three strokes and heart attack after their highly publicised 2018 drug overdose, adding they were “minutes from death”.
