The B.1.621 has been discovered in at least 16 people. So far, scientists say there is no evidence to suggest it causes a more severe reaction in a person compared with other variants. The coronavirus vaccines on the market are believed to be effective against this new strain.
The latest mutation of the virus to hit Britain comes as cases of the Delta variant, which was first detected in India, continue to soar.
Health officials have followed up cases of the latest mutation and tested those who were in contact with the infected person.
Experts at Public Health England (PHE) are studying the new variant and, if necessary, will deploy surge testing to limit the spread.
The new variant has also been detected in the US, South America and Europe.
Health authorities in Colombia have confirmed 325 cases while the US has 264 people infected with the variant.
Spain has said 196 people who tested positive for Covid had the B.1.621.
