Warning Boris Johnson could hand sovereignty ‘from Brussels to Beijing’ with 5G plans | World | News

Mike Pompeo has said that the National Security Council now faces a “momentous decision”. Speaking to The Telegraph he commented: “The truth is that only nations able to protect their data will be sovereign.”

Mr Pompeo is expected to speak with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Dominic Raab on Wednesday.

This will be a day after the NSC will decide whether the conglomerate should be granted access to 5G.

So far, the US and Australia have banned Huawei from 5G networks in their country.

This is over concerns that it would leave them exposed to espionage.

Now US officials have warned British MPs that if the UK allow the firm to have 5G, it could undermine intelligence sharing between the US and the UK.

Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat stressed that the UK runs the risk of giving China its sovereignty, should they allow Huawei access.

Mr Tugendhat told The Telegraph: “Talking to former prime ministers, serving MPs, congressmen and senators from our Five-Eyes and EU partners, it’s clear the Huawei decision is being seen as an indicator of how we see the world.

He suggested that the case might even be bigger than the impeachment trial the US President is facing.

White House sources have said that Trump may even tweet a suggestion of the UK and the US joining forces to conjure their own service provider.

It is the reported the Prime Minister and the President in a phone conversation spoke about the possibility of 5G collaboration.

Mr Pompeo is hoping to use meetings in the coming days to “discuss ways to broaden and deepen trade ties” after the looming Brexit, the State Department has said.

The National Security Council is reported to be split on the matter.

Meanwhile Culture Secretary Baroness Morgan seemed to play down American concerns over Huawei when she had discussions with US officials.

However, Tory MP Julian Knight asked Parliament to “take note” of the issues raised by the Mr Tugendhat.

Yesterday opposition to Huawei increased from backbench Tory MPs.

Julian Knight said Parliament must “take note” of warnings issued by Mr Tugendhat and Bob Seely.

Steve Baker, of the European Research Group, said to the Telegraph: “It would lead to enduring alarm if the government approved Huawei technology without setting out in some detail what risks have been considered, how they have been dismissed or mitigated.”
