Prince Charles and Princess Diana: 40 Year Wedding Anniversary
[ad_1]
The royal couple married on July 29, 1981, at St Paul’s Cathedral in London in a traditional Church of England service. Lady Diana Spencer as she was then known wowed the crowd in a fairytale-like dress as she walked up the aisle aged 19 with her father, Earl John Spencer. The wedding dress was valued at £9,000, which would roughly be around £35,000 in 2021.
The dress was made of ivory silk taffeta material and lace, and hand-embroidered with sequins and 10,000 pearls.
The British designers were called Elizabeth and David Emanuel and this dress made them household names in the fashion market.
The dress had a 25-foot train of ivory taffeta and antique lace which glided up the aisle in the cathedral.
Princess Diana reportedly wanted to have the longest train in royal wedding history, so the dress was made with her wishes in mind.

Her wedding dress is widely considered an emblem of 1980s fashion and wedding dresses of that era.
The puffy shoulders and the balloon-styled skirt were loved by many but by contemporary fashion standards, it is clear the wedding took place in 1981.
Some fashion commentators criticised the creased looking material of the dress, however, the designers claim they did not know the material was so prone to crumpling.
Royal wedding dress designer, Chloe Savage says: “It was a beautiful dress, but someone should have warned them that it was going to be stuffed in the carriage!

“It looked like it needed to be pressed.”
Diana wore the Spencer family’s heirloom tiara over an ivory silk tulle veil, which looked absolutely radiant and innocent.
Diana also had her hair styled in a short crop by hairdresser Kevin Shanley for the special day.
Her shoes were low-heeled and designed by Clive Shilton, with C and D initials hand-painted on them.
Barbara Daly performed Diana’s makeup for the wedding, and the nineteen-year-old looked beautiful.
Prince Charles, 32 at the time, wore his full dress naval commander uniform as was expected of the heir to the throne.
Their marriage was universally promoted as a “fairytale wedding” and the “wedding of the century”.
The estimated global TV audience of the Royal Wedding came to 750 million people.
Events were also held across the Commonwealth to celebrate the Royal Wedding.
Street parties were very common across the entire week of the wedding, and merchandise was sold across the country to honour the occasion.
The royal couple were married officially for fifteen years eventually divorcing in 1996, although they separated four years earlier in 1992.
Each of the Prince and Princess of Wales’s children, Prince William and Prince Harry, have experienced their own Royal Wedding.
Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011, and Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in 2018.
