When director Peter Jackson was filming the Lord of the Rings trilogy he was met with a number of obstacles. He and the enormous cast of actors battled the elements of New Zealand as well as its perilous terrain. This was made evident when Samwise Gamgee star Sean was filming a scene where he ran towards Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) in the final moments of The Fellowship of the Ring.

Sean explained the situation in the bonus extras of the Lord of the Rings DVDs.
He said: “I’m running at a dead sprint and as my right foot lands about two feet in the water – it’s just this huge sharp pain.
“And I grabbed onto the side of the boat and looked down and it hurt so bad.”
As Sean’s prosthetic-covered foot went into the water it was deeply pierced by a large shard of glass, leaving him almost unable to walk.

Peter said in the DVD extras: “[Sean’s] foot had virtually been completely impaled by this shard of glass.
“When they took the prosthetic off it was a big deep gash in the foot. It was a substantial cut.”
Elijah, who was just off-screen, could be heard exclaiming: “That’s a lot of blood!”
Peter then revealed he had to call in some help to get Sean out of the woods and to a hospital.
Merry and Pippin actors Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd explained Sean’s actions meant they had to re-film the scene in RotK that involved Frodo leaving the Shire at the Grey Havens.
Speaking on their podcast, the Friendship Onion, Dominic said: “Well, we had to do [the scene] three times!”
Billy explained: “For those of you who don’t know why we did it three times… Sean Astin [who plays Samwise] was wearing the wrong costume.”
Billy continued: “After lunch, he took off his vest to eat lunch. When he came back he forgot to put the vest on, so for continuity, it was ruined.”
To make matters worse, the film used to shoot the scene was then destroyed.
The actor added: “We came back another day and filmed it again, and the film got destroyed in the factory where it gets processed. So we had to then do it again another day! That’s why we had to do it three times.”
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is available to watch on NOW.
