The fee was announced by EU officials two-and-a-half months after Home Secretary Priti Patel confirmed plans to charge EU citizens and other foreign nationals to visit the UK, though she has not yet named the price of the charge.

Citizens from more than 60 countries outside the Schengen free-travel zone, including the US and Australia, will all be required to pay the £6 fee to pre-register for visa-free travel to Europe as part of the EU’s new European Travel Information and Authorisation System.

Once approved, the visa will remain valid for three years and can be used for multiple trips, meaning the fee works out at £2 per year.

The EU fee is expected to apply to around 40 million people and will be waived for under 18s and over 70s.

British Unionist Andy Brown said on Twitter: “Wow that’s nearly the price of a G&T (without the tonic) every 3 yrs. What a bite!”

Lindsay Giles replied: “Really! £6 over 3 years, what’s the problem?”

Another Twitter user said: “If you can afford to travel to the EU then you probably won’t notice the charge.”

The process to register will be quick and easy, as EU officials say that 95 percent of applications will be approved within minutes.

The European Commission said: “The process will be simple, fast and affordable.”

However, pre-registering will be essential because individuals will be turned away on arrival to EU countries and sent back to the UK if they have not filled out the necessary documents.

Travellers will have to provide information about their identity, passport, education, job, recent travel and criminal convictions in an attempt to bolster security at EU borders.

Officials say the system will stop those “who may pose a risk to security or health, as well as compliance with migration rules”.

Is it fair for the EU to charge Britons to visit Europe, considering the UK’s plans to charge Europeans visiting Great Britain? Vote now.
