Kate told Mala Tribich, a Holocaust survivor who was forced into a ghetto before being sent to Bergen-Belsen: “We were talking to the children about it earlier today. But we have to be, you know for a six-year-old, the interpretation.” She explained of delivering the sensitive facts to her eldest child in an age-appropriate manner.

Kate and Prince William met with survivors of genocide at Westminster’s Central Hall, including those by Nazis, and countries including Cambodia, Rwanda, and Darfur.

The Duke of Cambridge read a moving extract from a friend of his great grandmother Princess Alice, who had saved the Cohen’s, a Jewish family from the Holocaust.

He said: “When the persecution of the Jews by the Germans began, Princess Alice asked to be informed about the fate of the Cohen family.

“Having been informed by friends and by her lady in waiting about the plight of Mrs Cohen and her young daughter, the Princess decided to offer her hospitality to the two ladies; in fact to hide them in her home despite the danger this entailed.

“The Princess put a small two-room apartment on the third floor at the disposal of Mrs Cohen and her daughter.

“It was thanks to the courageous rescue of Princess Alice that the members of the Cohen family were saved.

“The members of the Cohen family left the residence three weeks after liberation, aware that by virtue of the Princess’s generosity and bravery had spared them from the Nazis.

“The great-granddaughter of Rachel Cohen, Evy Cohen, said this two years ago: ‘My family would not exist without the courageous act of Princess Alice. Her story of incredible courage must keep being told in her memory.’”

The royal couple also lit candles at the service to remember all those whose lives were lost by the concentration camps worldwide.

It comes after there were reports of Nazi propaganda sprayed around London, including Swaztikas that were seen on a wall over in southeast London.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he felt a “deep sense of shame” that antisemitism is still continuing in the United Kingdom today.

Arriving at the ceremony, William told survivor, Sir Ben Helfgott, he and his wife would “do our best” to continue to pass the message on to the next generation.

The service was a chance to reflect upon the darkest period in history when 11 million people were brutally murdered in Nazi death camps.

Inmates of the regime were subjected to unspeakable torture including starvation, medical experiments, and sterilisation.

The ceremony saw readings from actresses Nina Wadia and Rebecca Front before a performance was given by LGBT choir, The Fourth Choir.

A hidden child in France during the Holocaust, Yvonne Bernstein said that Kate and Prince William’s presence at the ceremony was “vital”.

She said: “I think it’s absolutely vital, I think it really is important.

“They do a terrific job.”

Yvonne was one of the four survivors to be photographed alongside her family for a series of photographs captured by the Duchess of Cambridge to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

After Kate was commended on the images, she responded: “I had a very good model! She was fantastic. It was very special, I was very honoured.”

The two women hugged and seemed happy to be reunited, with the Duchess telling Yvonne, 82, “You were brilliant, you were very patient.”

“I came out pretty well!” laughed Yvonne.

Yvonne said later of meeting Kate: “I got a kiss on both cheeks from the Duchess. She and all her staff were so kind to us. We were made to feel very comfortable.”
