Harry Styles, Celeste, Lewis Capaldi and Arlo Parks are among the nominees announced for this year’s Ivor Novello Awards.

Former One Direction star Styles and writing partner Kid Harpoon lead the way with three nominations in two categories at the awards, which recognise creative musical achievement in songwriting and composition, and also celebrate a number of artists for their wider contribution to UK music.

Watermelon Sugar, also a Grammy and Brit-winning song, and Adore You, both part-written by the pair, are on the Ivor Novello 2021 shortlist for the PRS for Music prize for most performed work, while the musicians themselves are also in the running for the songwriter of the year award.

Fellow Brit-winner Capaldi also has two songs up for the PRS award, Before You Go and Someone You Loved, with Joel Corry and MNEK’s number one hit Head & Heart making up the shortlist.

Other artists nominated for songwriter of the year are AJ Tracey, Celeste and Jamie Hartman, Kamille and MNEK.

Some 70% of this year’s nominees are artists and songwriters who have been recognised for the first time, organisers of the awards said, including AJ Tracey, Laura Marling and Mahalia.

Arlo Parks, who won best new artist at the Brit Awards earlier this year and is also nominated for the Mercury Prize, picks up her first nomination for Black Dog in the category for best song musically and lyrically.

She faces competition from Brit Rising Star 2020 winner Celeste – also nominated for the Mercury Prize – for her track Stop This Flame, as well as Man’s World by Marina, formerly Marina And The Diamonds.

Headie One & Fred again..’s song Gang, and God’s Own Children by Obongjayar are also nominated.

Pa Salieu is nominated for two awards – best album, for Send Them to Coventry, and best contemporary song for Energy, featuring Mahalia.

Lianne La Havas is also up for best album for her self-titled third record with co-writer Matthew Hales, nine years after she was last nominated for her debut.

And in the nominations for best soundtrack, the shortlist features original music from fan favourites including Noughts + Crosses, A Suitable Boy and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

All Saints star Shaznay Lewis, an Ivor Novello award winner and chair of The Ivors Awards committee, congratulated all the nominees and said she was “really delighted” that the majority have been shortlisted for the first time.

“Over the last year we’ve felt the power of songwriting and the stories told through music,” she said. “The Ivors are so important because they celebrate where all the music begins – with songwriters and composers.

“The judges have chosen a selection of exceptional music that moves, unites and inspires us.”

Winners will be announced at a ceremony at Grosvenor House in London on 21 September.

Last year’s winners included Dave, Little Simz, Calvin Harris, Labrinth and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, while Joan Armatrading was awarded the Academy Fellowship.
