In 1989 Black Sabbath released their 14th album, Headless Cross. The record came ten years after Ozzy Osbourne was kicked out of the band and seven years after Ronnie James Dio left the band. Despite having a tough decade of losing and gaining singers, the record reviewed fairly well, receiving a collection of four-star scores. One of the tracks included on the album, When Death Calls, had an appearance from Queen guitarist Brian May.

The song in question includes some haunting lyrics.

The first chorus includes the lines: “When Death Calls / This is the hours of dying / When Death Calls / The spirit of man cannot be freed / When Death Calls / There’s no tomorrow / When Death Calls / Just an evil shadow.”

Towards the end of the song Brian splits through the track with a face-melting guitar solo.

Although Black Sabbath didn’t release the song as a single, they did release a music video.

The live performance video showed the band’s singer at the time, Tony Martin, screaming through the energetic song, but Brian did not make an appearance.

Guitarist of the band Tony Iommi became fast friends with the Queen star during this period.

The pair have since spoken out about their relationship.

Brian recently revealed: “We do more talking than anything else, but we do a lot of talking. He is really my dearest friend in the business and has been for so many years.”

Brian continued: “I could write books about Tony because he’s just the most … I don’t even know how to put it into words.

“You know, he’s a luminous human being, is Tony, with a wonderful, kind nature and an incredibly baffling sense of humour. And, of course, he is the father of heavy metal.” (Via Guitar World)

He went on to add: “He did that. He made that happen. And it’s from his fingers and his mind.

“That young ex-welder, he made that happen. So, you know, he forever wears that medal, I think. He founded this stuff, heavy metal, in my opinion. I mean, I think probably most people would agree.”

Brian has also spoken candidly about a rumoured collaboration with Tony.

The pair have supposedly spent “hours” chatting and listening to one another’s riffs.

On this, Brian said: “I think there is a chance [fans will hear their music].”

Tony also spoke about how Brian helped him out in the past.

Tony said in 2013: “When I was first ill, Brian May came to visit me at my house in Lapworth.

“I played him some of my stuff, rock riffs that I’d never quite got round to developing, or decided not to use. He said I ought to do something with them.”

He added: “One of the ideas we had is that we could make the riffs available, get fans to use them in songs of their own, and see what they come up with. That way they’d effectively be recording with Brian and myself.”
