At the time of the album’s release, the band promoted their singles with candid chats on their Vevo page.

During a discussion about the album’s songs, Niall Horan explained how one song was written entirely for the fans: History.
He said: “We chose to have history on the record because we all agreed … it’s one of the best songs we’ve had. It’s got that kind of ‘sitting on the dock of the bay’ feel to it. Campire-y. Easy to play, four chords, simple.
“It kind of talks about history between ourselves and the fans.
“All the time we spent on the road, [with] the crew, the people that have been with us from day one.”

Niall continued: “It’s just the history of everything, from the last five years. You know, we can make some more [history], let’s not stop now! There’s just a good vibe about it.”
Louis Tomlinson also chimed in to give his take on the single.
In doing so, he also addressed the recent departure of Zayn Malik, who quit the band six months prior to the album’s release.
Louis said: “To me, History has so much to it and so much meaning and it’s just a perfect song, actually.”
One Direction continued on without Zayn until 2016
Louis continued: “It’s just… for the timing, now, for everything, for us to give that message across to the fans, I think is really really cool.
“So that’s hopefully something they’re going to enjoy and enjoy listening to, and really feel like they’re part of it as well.”
Dedicating a song to their fans was an important step for the band considering they had lost 1/5 of their line-up.
Zayn left on March 25, 2015 during the Asian leg of a world tour, citing “stress” and wanting to live a “normal” 22-year-old life.

One Direction went on to release a statement at the time, which read: “The past five years have been beyond amazing, we’ve gone through so much together, so we will always be friends.
“The four of us will now continue. We’re looking forward to recording the new album and seeing all the fans on the next stage of the world tour.”
Zayn also announced: “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.
“I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”
Exactly one year later, on March 25, 2016, Zayn released his debut solo album, Mind of Mine.
The record reached the top of the Billboard Top 200 chart.
His first single, Pillow Talk, also hit number one in the singles chart.
On January 13, 2016, it was announced One Direction had split up.
