Kate Middleton altered ‘iconic’ £390,000 Diana’s ring for ‘sense of closeness’

When Prince William proposed to Kate in 2010, he presenter her with a sapphire from his late mother, Princess Diana.

However, they soon realised the ring had to be resized as it was too big for the Duchess of Cambridge.

The couple had to go to jeweller G. Collins and Sons to have the ring resized.

However, instead of beaking the band, they opted for adding small platinum beads inside the band to make the diameter smaller.

“On their tenth anniversary, we estimate that the ring is now worth £390,000 based on the value of the stone and band.

“Although with the ring being an iconic cultural piece it could fetch hundreds of thousands more if it ever reached auction.”

The expert explained that the ring is indeed one of the Duchess’ favourite jewels and the piece in her collection “with the most personal meaning.”

“Not only does the ring hold a special place in her heart in regards to Prince William and their marriage.

“It also pays homage to the late Princess Diana.”

The jewel expert said the Duchess of Cambridge had a desire to wear Princess Diana’s ring due to the “sense of closeness” that would bring.

“Wearing Diana’s ring perhaps brings her a sense of closeness to her mother-in-law and her children’s grandmother, whom Kate didn’t get the chance to meet,” explained Ben.

The expert said that although the Duchess has other pieces that belonged to Diana, she is rarely seen wearing them.

“Whilst Kate has often worn jewellery owned and worn by the late Princess Diana, she tends to save these pieces for special events.”

But what is the reason behind it?

“They are some of the most extravagant pieces in the royal collection.

“They may also hold a higher personal value to both Kate and William who perhaps wish to keep them for rarer occasions as a result,” Ben said.
