Crown Princess Victoria’s engagement ring broke Swedish royal tradition and ignited change

Whenever a royal gets down on one knee and asks someone to marry them, there is a flurry of excitement about the engagement ring. From Kate Middleton’s iconic 12-carat blue sapphire, surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds, which was passed down from Princess Diana by her eldest son, Prince William, to Princess Eugenie’s stunning padparadscha sapphire and Meghan Markle’s three-stone diamond ring which Prince Harry presented her with. Most follow royal tradition or are inspired by their predecessors, however, the Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden’s sparkling diamond was very different from her relatives before her.

In 2009, Crown Princess Victoria got engaged to personal trainer Daniel Westling, whom she had known since the mid-2000s.

A year later, Daniel and Victoria said “I do” in Stockholm, Sweden in front of family, friends and millions of royal spectators.

This year marked their 11th wedding anniversary and Victoria still wears her white gold ring with the round diamond solitaire Daniel had given her.

It’s said the ring may be the work of Bolin, official court jewellers of King Carl XVI Gustaf.

And Daniel’s decision to present Victoria with a diamond engagement ring was a break from Swedish tradition.

In past generations, royal couples had exchanged simple gold bands to mark their engagements.

Crown Princess Victoria’s aunt, Princess Birgitta got engaged to Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern in 1960 with a gold band.

Her brother and Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf followed suit in 1976.

But when Victoria and her siblings got engaged, they all opted for similarly modern rings.

On Victoria and Daniel’s wedding day, Daniel gave the heir to the throne an additional jewel: her wedding band which was studded with diamonds.

Crown Princess Victoria usually wears the two rings together on her left hand but the engagement ring tends to slide off to the side of her finger rather than staying centred.

When Princess Victoria announced her engagement to Daniel, there was disdain from Europe’s upper classes and the press scmp.com reports, but she vehemently defended her right to love her future prince.

Nowadays, Prince Daniel is a well-regarded member of the Swedish royal family and together they live in Haga Palace, Stockholm with their two children, Princess Estelle, nine and Prince Oscar, five.

Another reason why the Crown Princess Victoria could be considered one of the most popular royals in all of Europe’s monarchies is because of the work she has carried out.

One of the most prominent reasons why Princess Victoria is so well respected and admired is because of her down-to-earth personality.

She has previously opened up about her health struggles, which include dyslexia and even a public battle with anorexia in the 90s.

And her education has allowed her to tell her story so eloquently because the future Swedish queen speaks four languages: Swedish, English, French and German.

To add to this, she has travelled the world extensively representing her homeland and promoting Sweden to the global community.

And after last year’s Stockholm Pride Event which she gave a speech at, the Crown Princess was recently given an award for her support of the LGBTQ community.
