Police have described Margaret Loughrey’s passing as a “sudden death” but it is not being treated as suspicious. The 56-year-old woman, who won big on the Irish EuroMillions in 2013, was discovered today at her home in Strabane, Co Tyrone, in Northern Ireland.
PSNI (Police Service Northern Ireland) told the Irish Mirror: “Police received a report of the sudden death of a woman at the Ballycolman Lane area of Strabane on Thursday 2nd September.
“A post mortem is due to take place but at this stage, the death is not being treated as suspicious.”
Jason Barr, Social Democratic and Labour Party councillor for the area, said: “My thoughts and prayers are with the Loughry family and they’re with friends of Margaret as well. It’s a very sad day.
“Margaret would have been well thought of… She has had her ups and downs in life like all of us but hopefully she’s at rest now.”
The lottery win earned the woman the nickname “Maggie Millions” as, when she secured her fortune, she was unemployed and living on benefits.
But in 2019, Ms Loughrey claimed she had only £5million of her fortune left after being the victim of numerous thefts.
Speaking in a newspaper interview at the time, she said: “I have had six years of this and I don’t believe in religion, but if there is a hell, I have been in it. It has been that bad. I went down to five-and-a-half-stone.
“I won £27m. I have just over £5m left, but a lot of that I gave to people. I will never have peace as long as I live.
“Even if I didn’t have a penny left, I won’t.”
