Banksy’s Love Is In The Bin – the artwork that self-shredded after being sold in 2018 – has sold for £18.5m, a record for the artist at auction.

Sotheby’s said the “decommissioned, remote controlled shredding mechanism” was still in the frame.

The piece was originally titled Girl With Red Balloon when it sold for just over a million in October 2018, again at Sotheby’s.

Moment Banksy artwork sells for record price

It “self destructed” remotely moments after selling and the incident has become one of the artist’s most famous stunts.

The anonymous buyer in the 2018 auction held on to the piece, meaning they have made a very healthy profit of about £15m.

The hammer went down at £16m, but after Sotheby’s fee the price was £18,582,000,
