At some point in the 1960s The Beatles began working with Quincy Jones, the legendary music producer. The star has over 80 Grammy Award nominations under his belt, as well as credits in albums from Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Chaka Khan and many more. But in 2018 the iconic producer revealed that he once duped Ringo Starr out of recording a song for the band.

Jones recalled Starr having a bad time during the recording of one song in particular.

He said: “I remember once we were in the studio with [The Beatles’ producer] George Martin, and Ringo had taken three hours for a four-bar thing he was trying to fix on a song. He couldn’t get it.”

So, with that, Jones and Martin reportedly decided to just get rid of him.

Jones went on: “We said: ‘Mate, why don’t you get some lager and lime, some shepherd’s pie, and take an hour-and-a-half and relax a little bit?'” (Via The New Yorker)

So, Starr did as he was told by his boss. He went out and disappeared for over an hour.

Meanwhile, Jones and Martin arranged for a jazz drummer named Ronnie Verrell to visit the studio.

He said: “Ronnie came in for 15 minutes and tore it up.”

When Starr returned, he was eager to attempt the song he was struggling with once again – but he had been duped.

Jones did, however, call The Beatles “the worst musicians in the world” later in the interview.

He added: “They were no-playing motherf*****s.

“Paul was the worst bass player I ever heard. And Ringo? Don’t even talk about it.”

Paul McCartney later revealed Jones called him after the comments were made.

He recalled Jones telling him: “Paul, I didn’t really say that thing – I don’t know what happened, man. I never said that. You know I love you guys!”

McCartney replied: “If you had said that, you know what I would have said? F**k you, Quincy Jones!”

McCartney added: “So actually we just had a laugh.”
