Meghan Markle & Kate Middleton: Royals ‘are two very different women’ with style

Meghan Markle’s bold red look on the red carpet at the Salute to Freedom Gala, in some respects, may have been an attempt to make headlines across the world, just like Kate Middleton did at the James Bond premiere. Kate wore a dazzling gold Jenny Packham gown on September 28 at the premiere of ‘No Time To Die’, the latest James Bond film starring Daniel Craig. Royal fans went into a frenzy after seeing Kate’s dress, with Twitter account @katiesroyallove tweeting: “This is how you do it! This has got to be one of The Duchess of Cambridge’s best looks.”

However, it is difficult to know whether Meghan made the same impact in her beautiful red ballgown.

Daena Borrowman, Marketing Manager at jewellerybox, seems to think so, and exclusively spoke to Express.co.uk about how Meghan “stole the show”.

She said: “The Duchess of Sussex’s New York wardrobe, worth a reported total of over £60,000, has been making international headlines for all the right reasons, but, her jaw-dropping red dress moment at the 2021 Freedom Gala is undeniably the most glamorous of all her looks from the trip.

“Duchess Meghan stole the show in a ravishing red Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2022 ball gown.

“Worth upwards of £4000, the gown featured a strappy, almost corset-like deep cut racer neck top and a tasteful slit at the front of a full, voluminous skirt.

“A pair of matching red satin Giuseppe Zanotti jewel embellished Samia slingback stiletto pumps worth £316 completed her look.

“To accessorise, the Duchess chose the Canadian jewellery house, Birks’ Snowstorm diamond earrings set in white gold worth a whopping £11,220.

“She also paid a touching tribute to her iconic mother-in-law, the late Princess Diana by wearing her tennis Cartier bracelet, valued at over £17,000, alongside a second Cartier bracelet – the “Love” yellow gold bracelet worth £5800.

“She wore her hair in a slick high bun and stuck to very minimal nude makeup, balanced out by sharp eyeliner. Both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex sported poppy pins in honour of Remembrance day in Britain.

“Now, with no Palace dress code to hold her back, the Duchess has been able to really re-embrace her spectacular sense of style.

“She has a long history of backing feminist and female led causes, long before her royal initiation, however, since becoming royal, she has been using her clothes and jewellery to make strong statements of support.

“The Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex are two very different women, both of whom can hold their own in the public spotlight.

“While Duchess Kate, once a commoner, has had to be trained on her public image since stepping into the Royal Family, Duchess Meghan’s former career in show business and lifelong exposure to the media has, in a way, equipped her for royal life from the get-go.

“Both Duchesses can switch from the glitziest gowns to smart business looks with the same grace and both Duchesses wield the power to cause the items of clothing that they are wearing to sell out worldwide in minutes.

“Princess Diana would surely be proud.”

Creative resource Design Bundles analysed Google search data for Kate and Meghan’s Red-Carpet gowns within two fourteen-day periods for Express.co.uk, and discovered that Kate Middleton’s outfit – a glittering gold dress by Jenny Packham – made the biggest impression on the UK.

The data revealed that searches for ‘gold dress’ exploded 92 percent in the UK on the September 29, one day after Kate revealed her gold outfit.

When it came to Meghan’s outfit, searches for ‘red dress’ jumped by only 75 percent in the UK on the November 13, two days after the Duchess of Sussex showcased her red Carolina Herrera gown at the Salute to Freedom Gala.

A spokesperson for Design Bundles exclusively told Express.co.uk: “The fact that the Duchess of Cambridge is famous for wearing regal yet exquisitely understated clothing could well be the reason that her gold dress at the James Bond premiere caused a bigger spike in searches than Meghan’s red gown at the time of the Salute to Freedom Gala, despite both royal women clearly wanting to make an impression with their gowns.

“Everything about Kate Middleton’s outfit on the night of the ‘No Time To Die’ premiere emphasised her royalty, which is particularly fascinating considering how popular she has made herself by her elegant thriftiness (her multiple recycling of outfits, for example, the McQueen coat she re-wore on Harry and Meghan’s wedding day) and refusal to upstage the royal order of rank.

“Indeed, her gold metallic dress, embellished with thousands of sparkling sequins and draping the gown’s architectural shoulders with a cloak reminiscent of a Greek goddess, may well have been the first time many of us registered that we were looking at the future Queen Consort of England, which she will become after Prince William ascends the throne.”
