Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng is set to face further scrutiny as it is revealed he held secret meetings with Saudi oil firms while he was Chancellor.
Documents revealed to The Guardian through the Freedom of Information Act show that the Chancellor held undisclosed meetings with the chief executive of Saudi Aramco, the world’s biggest oil producer; the chief executive of Sabic, the world’s fourth largest petrochemical company; and the chair of Alfanar Group, an industrial conglomerate.
Transparency disclosures from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy did not contain any reference to meetings during the period that Mr Kwarteng was in Saudi Arabia when originally published.
Although meetings with foreign government figures do not have to be declared, meetings with business executives do.
A government spokesperson said there had been an “administrative oversight”.
