One Piece fans terrified Netflix live-action show censors Sanji’s chain-smoking | Books | Entertainment

Among the main Straw Hat Pirates crew in One Piece is the ship’s cook Vinsmoke Sanji.
In Eiichiro Oda’s manga, the character is famous for his kicks, sporting a jacket and tie and chain-smoking.
Infamously, his cigarettes were censored in the 4Kids version of the anime, being converted into a lollipop.
With the release of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the series, fans have been worrying that Sanji’s tobacco puffing has been censored for today’s audiences.
So far the trailers, including the final one released today, do not feature the pirate – who is rarely seen without a fag in his mouth in the manga and anime – smoking at all.
On top of this, Netflix posted some pictures of the cast and at the front is Sanji live-action star Taz Skylar, who is sucking on a pink lollipop.
Distraught fans commented on the picture, “NOT THE 4KIDS REFERENCE” and “Wait Sanji isn’t smoking ????”
It’s true he’s not yet been seen puffing away on a cigarette in any of the One Piece promotional material, but rumour has it, he will some of the time.
One fan pointed out how the US age rating for One Piece has been changed from TV-14 to TV-Mature (over 17 only).
Included in the classification were the following: language, nudity, self-harm, violence and yes, you guessed it, smoking.
Other fans have claimed an early reviewer confirmed that Sanji does smoke in the live-action series. Now just wait until season 2 with Naval officer Smoker who always has two cigars in his mouth in the manga and anime.
One Piece is streaming on Netflix from 8am BST tomorrow.
