Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner as the Bundesliga club’s sporting director Markus Krosche revealed fears that the coronavirus pandemic could have a dramatic effect on the transfer market.
Clubs around the world are losing money while there is no football being played.
The Premier League will not resume until April 30 at the very earliest and the majority of training facilities have been shut down.
However, some club officials are using the next month to do the groundwork for some summer transfers.
But Krosche fears there may not be as much cash available as teams were expecting.
Liverpool were expected to meet Werner’s £51million release clause but the Leipzig chief believes there could be issues on the horizon.
“It is clear that Timo aroused desires at other clubs with his great performances with his goals and assists (but) everything is possible,” Krosche told Sport1.
“We do not know how the transfer market is developing. We are looking into a very foggy glass ball.
“We do not know what our resources are and what the other clubs have in terms of opportunities.
“England has the same problems as we do. Relying on the fact that the clocks there work differently just because they have investors is wrong.
“There is a lot to suggest that my style of play would suit there (Liverpool).
“Liverpool are the best team in the world at the moment,” he said.
“And when you’re linked with that team it makes me very proud. It’s a pleasure but I know Liverpool play a lot of good players.
“I have to improve myself and to learn much more things to get on this level to play there.”
