Mike Tyson has been urged to fight Evander Holyfield instead of Shannon Briggs
Mike Tyson should swerve a bout with Shannon Briggs and purse a trilogy fight with Evander Holyfield, former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye believes. In late April, 53-year-old Tyson revealed he’d resumed training with the hope of setting foot inside the squared circle again.
‘Iron Mike’ has continued to tease a sensational comeback on his social media, releasing videos of him ferociously hitting pads with renowned mixed martial arts coach Rafael Cordeiro.
Ever since Tyson – who retired from boxing in 2006 after consecutive losses to Danny Williams and Kevin McBridge – declared himself “back”, fight fans have been wondering who will welcome the former undisputed heavyweight champion back to the ring.
Earlier this week, former IBU heavyweight champion Briggs claimed he’d agreed to fight Tyson in a charity match after a positive conversation.
That prospect of Tyson facing Briggs, who last competed four years ago, doesn’t sit well with Haye, who would like to see the legend lock horns with a fighter close to his age.
Mike Tyson is set to be welcomed back to the ring by Shannon Briggs, according to ‘The Cannon’
I’d like to see him against Holyfield or someone else who’s his own age. Someone who is older.
And the ‘Hayemaker’ reckons no bout makes more sense for ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ than a trilogy fight with Holyfield.
Speaking ahead of Gousto’s Table for 1 Million virtual dinner, Haye told Express Sport: “I wouldn’t really like it; I wouldn’t really be interested in seeing him fight Shannon Briggs.
“I’d like to see him against Holyfield or someone else who’s his own age. Someone who is older.”
Haye’s reluctance to see Tyson take on Briggs stems from the fact the former has been out of the ring a decade longer than the latter.

He added: “I think the fact that Shannon Briggs has been boxing recently; I’d prefer him to fight another older fighter.”
Unlike some boxing fans, Haye has no desire to see Tyson test himself against any active heavyweights.
“If he fought someone like George Foreman, who’s even older than he is, or someone like that, that’s one thing,” he said. “But fighting fighters who currently active fighters, I wouldn’t want to see.
“We saw what happened when Tyson fought Kevin McBridge 17 years ago (16 years ago) or when he fought Danny Williams, which was even longer than that ago.
Mike Tyson’s comeback fight should be a third showdown with Evander Holyfield, Haye believes
“I really wouldn’t want to see him fight somebody who wouldn’t be good enough to be his sparring partner in his day beat him. I wouldn’t want to see that. I wouldn’t mind seeing him getting in there against another guy in the twilight of his life. It gives them a reason to stay healthy.”
The notion of Tyson fighting again, even in an exhibition bout, has irked many, with several adamant he has no business being in the ring at his age.
Haye is well and truly on the opposite side of the fence when it comes to the Hall of Famer and will happily part his with hard-earned cash to watch the former undisputed champion take to the ring again.
“I like it,” Haye said of Tyson’s seemingly imminent return. “I’d tune in” I’d pay money to sit ringside and watch Mike Tyson.
“I watched him when he fought Lou Savarese, I watched him when fought Julius Francis. I’ve seen the Mike Tyson show when he’s been in town and it’s a circus. It really is.
“There’s no other event like a Mike Tyson event. He’s an all-time great for a reason.”
Gousto’s Table for 1 Million virtual dinner with David Haye, Nick Grimshaw, Paloma Faith and Katherine Ryan takes place on Friday, May 22nd at 8pm BST.
