Liverpool have confirmed that Virgil van Dijk has undergone successfully knee surgery as he now prepares to embark on their first stage of his rehabilitation program. The Reds remain adamant they will not put a timeframe on his return after issuing their support in a statement on their website.

The Dutchman limped off after just 10 minutes of the Merseyside derby with Everton earlier this month following a full-blooded challenge from Jordan Pickford at Goodison Park.

Scans revealed that Van Dijk had suffered a Grade 3 injury, a complete tear of the ligament which also creates a lack of stability in the knee joint.

But now the Premier League champions have confirmed their colossal centre-back is on the road to recovery, as Jurgen Klopp works to find solutions on the field.

It read: “Virgil van Dijk has undergone surgery on the knee ligament injury he sustained earlier this month.

They did call on the versatility of Fabinho in those matches though and the Brazilian is now set for a spell on the sidelines himself after picking up a hamstring injury.

Thankfully for Klopp, the problem is not thought to be as bad as first feared meaning Fabinho could be in line to return after the international break.

Young Rhys Williams looks in line for more opportunities as Joel Matip continues to struggle for fitness.

The 19-year-old has come off the bench in both of Liverpool’s Champions League matches and could earn a start against West Ham at the weekend.

Klopp can also count himself fortunate that goalkeeper Alisson Becker has made his return to action just at the right time.
