Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel slams Callum Hudson-Odoi after disappointing Southampton draw | Football | Sport

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has spoken out after his side’s 1-1 draw with Southampton. The Blues went into the game looking to continue their charge towards a place in next season’s Champions League. However, they were forced to settle for a point at St Mary’s.

Chelsea were held to a disappointing draw.

The Blues were dominant in the first half but fell behind when Takumi Minamino, on loan from Liverpool, struck to give Southampton the lead.

The forward bamboozled Cesar Azpilicueta with a fine piece of footwork before striking past Edouard Mendy to open the scoring.

Chelsea did, however, respond through Mason Mount.

Mount scored a penalty, with Jorginho on the bench, after Danny Ings fouled the England international inside the area.

“It is always a big week so it is mixed feelings at the moment, it will not be easier to score against Atletico.”

Chelsea goalscorer Mount feels they didn’t create enough chances to win the game.

“We had a lot of control in the first half,” he said.

“We spoke at half-time. We didn’t create enough in the final third. It was poor.

“They had one chance and scored, they caught us off guard.”

Meanwhile, Southampton star Nathan Redmond expressed his delight with the point his side earned.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “We knew this (Chelsea having possession) was going to be the case, they have new management and a new style of play.

“We have watched a lot of their video clips, studied them to see how we can nullify the threat and earn our way into the game.

“It was great movement from Takumi Minamino for the goal and it just so happens that I could play him in, he has been great since he has come in and shown his quality.

“Danny Ings, you cannot say a bad thing about him since he has come here but things happen and we had to get back into the game by implementing what we can do. It is a point gained with the results we have had.

“A draw today against a very good side will hopefully give us confidence going forward.”

Saints captain James Ward-Prowse added: “[This point is] important. It’s not nice to be on a losing streak.

“We knew it was going to be tough. We were up against a very tough team, rejuvenated with a new manager.

“It was a great finish from [Minamino]. He showed his quality and his class.

“[Chelsea’s penalty] was their only real moment in the game where they showed us difficulties. Everybody to a man defended really well.

“We were up against some really good players so we showed that little bit of grit today.

“Every team goes through a tough period. The games come fast so there’s plenty of opportunities to put things right. This was a good step.”
