Bruno Fernandes set to agree new £200k-a-week Man Utd contract despite Harry Kane promise | Football | Sport

Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes is set to sign a new contract worth £200,000 a week according to reports, despite it being claimed that United are willing to pay Harry Kane double his current wages – which would also be twice the amount of Fernandes’ salary – to sign the frontman from Tottenham.

Kane is a transfer target for United and earns around £200,000 a week at present with the striker looking to quit Premier League rivals Spurs to compete for major honours having yet to win a trophy in his career.

Fernandes would no doubt love to have Kane ahead of him given the world-class quality of the 27-year-old, who has 22 goals and 13 assists in 34 Premier League appearances this season.

The Portuguse by contrast stands on 18 goals and 11 assists from 37 games and would undoubtedly feel more confident of a sustained title challenge with the England captain leading the line.

Yet whether he would be so happy about Kane earning close to double his salary, given his contributions to United in the past 18 months since joining from Sporting Lisbon, may be another matter.

The Daily Mirror say Fernandes is set to put pen to paper on an improved Old Trafford deal in the coming weeks despite his current agreement running until June 2025.

The attacking midfielder’s agent Miguel Pinto reportedly flew into Manchester last Tuesday to hold face-to-face talks with United about a new contract.

The Red Devils are keen to wrap up talks before the Euros begin on June 11, during and after which they will be primarily focused on doing any incoming and outgoing transfer business.

That includes a potential swoop for £150million-rated Spurs talisman Kane, who wants to leave the north Londoners at the end of the season.

United are one of the main clubs keen, alongside Manchester City and Chelsea, and are willing to put a huge financial package on the table to lure Kane in it has been claimed.

Ian McGarry said on Reach PLC’s Transfer Window Podcast on Saturday: “He has not yet requested a transfer in a formal sense.

“It is our information that Manchester United have made it clear to Harry Kane that should he need to push the transfer, i.e. ask for a transfer in an official sense, which would disbar his entitlement to a pay-off on his current contract, which is around £6m net per year until 2024 meaning he would lose out on £18m of salary if he asked for a transfer.

“United are prepared to compensate him for that loss of earnings in a signing-on fee which could be paid over the length of his contract and obviously he would expect and will be offered around twice his current deal at Tottenham.

“Not only would he be earning more but he would get some compensation fee for the wages he gives up should he need to force his way out of Tottenham.”

United boss Solskjaer refused to be drawn on speculation linking him with Kane and said: “We’re looking to strengthen the squad, of course. There are many, many, many things you have to consider when you put a squad together.

“I’m not saying that if Eddie [Cavani] stays that means someone else in a forward position won’t come in.”

“I can’t talk about players at other teams. You know me well enough, I don’t think that’s very respectful of any team.`

“There are loads of good players out there – I could say [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo are interesting, but I can’t talk about them, you know that.”

While Kane said of his future to Sky Sports’ Gary Neville on The Overlap: “There’s definitely a conversation to be had with the club.

“It’s a moment in my career where I have to kind of reflect and see where I’m at and have a good, honest conversation with the chairman.

“As players you don’t know what the chairman is thinking. He might want to sell me. He might be thinking, ‘If I could get £100m then why not?’ I’m not going to be worth that for the next two or three years.

“I’m sure that [Daniel Levy] will want to set out the plan of where he sees it but ultimately it’s going to be down to me and how I feel and what’s going to be the best for me and my career this moment in time.”
