Tottenham may now get the chance to explore the possibility of appointing Antonio Conte after the Italian reportedly decided to part ways with Inter Milan. The former Chelsea boss has been in heated talks with owners Suning in the past few days over the future of the club amid Inter’s financial struggles and now it is believed he has decided to walk away.

Conte guided Inter to the Scudetto this season and ended his former side Juventus’ dominance in Italy by knocking the Old Lady off their perch.

Now Inter are expected to release a statement in the coming hours confirming that Conte has called time on his tenure at the San Siro just days after celebrating their historic triumph.

Suning asked the Inter players to take a pay cut earlier this month to help soften the financial burden on their shoulders.

Yet the squad refused to oblige given their efforts on the field and now Conte has been told he must raise £70million through player sales.

Reports in Italy two week ago suggested Tottenham privately reached out to Conte to try and determine whether he’d be interested in taking the job.

He allegedly told Spurs that his full focus was with Inter and that he was due to sit down with them at the end of the campaign.

Conte is said to have made it clear that he was unsure whether he would be able to continue at the club due to Inter’s financial struggles and opened the door to another round of discussions further down the line.

It is currently unclear whether Tottenham are set to explore the availability of Conte but he will now be a free agent once his departure from Inter is confirmed.

Roberto Martinez, Graham Potter and Ralf Rangnick are amongst the other names in contention for the Tottenham job.

Given that finances are already limited, Spurs want to avoid paying out any compensation to secure their new boss.

Conte is English speaking and has of course already managed in the Premier League with Tottenham’s rivals Chelsea.

He won the title in his first season in west London and was sacked a year later despite winning the FA Cup with the Blues.

The 51-year-old does not play the attractive and expansive football that Daniel Levy desires but he would bring a winning mentality to north London.
