Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has insisted that he is not surprised by the big-spending antics of his Premier League rivals, declaring that Manchester United and Chelsea ‘always find a solution’ in a thinly-veiled dig at last season’s second and fourth-placed finishers. The Reds have endured a quiet few months in the market, with the signing of defender Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig representing their only capture of the summer window thus far.

The 22-year-old penned a five-year deal at Anfield after his release clause of £36million was met by the six-time European champions.

A number of fringe players, including Harry Wilson and Marko Gruijc, have also been shipped out with the aim of supplementing Liverpool’s existing transfer budget.

Meanwhile, United and Chelsea have spent a combined total of around £174m on Jadon Sancho and Romelu Lukaku alone.

The Red Devils are imminently expected to confirm the signing of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane for another £41m in the latest instalment of their summer spending spree.

Manchester City have also been splashing the cash ahead of their upcoming Premier League title defence, with Jack Grealish joining for a British-record fee of £100m earlier this month.

When quizzed on the lucrative habits of Liverpool’s title rivals, Klopp admitted that he was unsure on how the aforementioned clubs, especially United, have been able to part ways with so much money.

“We all know the situation of Chelsea, City and PSG,” the German boss told reporters on Friday.

“What United are doing, I don’t know how they did it. We have our own way to do it. We are allowed to spend the money we earn, that we always did.

“This year we spent before we earned money with Konate because after last season, just to be clear, we cannot take any risk in this position at all.

DON’T MISS

“I’m never surprised about the financial power of Chelsea, City or United, I’ve been here long enough to know they always find a solution to these things.”

Liverpool’s net spend over the last ten years sits at around £344m, according to Transfermarkt, which is significantly lower than the equivalent figures for City, United and Chelsea.

The Blues have splashed around £511m on new players, while the two Manchester clubs have spent more than £2bn between them.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will be able to make any further additions this summer, with the Reds said to be eyeing the capture of at least one new forward.

The likes of Wolves starlet Pedro Neto and Jeremy Doku of Rennes have been linked with the Anfield club as of late, while it has also been suggested that another midfielder could be signed to replace Georginio Wijnaldum, who joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer earlier this summer.

Klopp gave a cryptic response when quizzed on his next move in the market, with the 54-year-old appearing to suggest that he is more than happy with his current options.

“You tell me which player we need, I’m really interested,” he said. “What type of player would you like to sign?

“Should he score more goals than Gini? Should he defend better than Fabinho? Be more creative than Naby [Keita], Curtis [Jones], Ox [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain] and Harvey [Elliott]?”

The Liverpool boss went on to add: “We cannot compare to the other clubs. They obviously don’t have any limits. We have limits.”
