Tottenham transfer news: Spurs risk being left red-faced by Erik Lamela decision | Football | Sport

[ad_1]

It is still early days, but Tottenham may already be beginning to regret their decision to swap Erik Lamela for Bryan Gil earlier in the transfer window. Spurs completed a deal to sign highly-rated Spanish winger Gil last month after offering Sevilla a reported £21.6m along with Lamela in a cash-plus-player deal.

It brought to an end the 29-year-old Argentinean’s eight year spell in north London, in which he showed flashes of brilliance but arguably never quite lived up to his full potential.

Given the way he has taken to life at Sevilla, however, Spurs may already be wondering whether they should have given him one more season to impress.

Lamela enjoyed a dream debut in La Liga as he scored twice in a 3-0 win for his team against Rayo Vallecano last weekend.

And things got even better on Monday night as he bagged a 93rd minute winner to earn a priceless 1-0 win away at Getafe.

Lamela’s quick start to life at his new club is in stark contrast to that of Gil at Spurs.

Things were not helped when his arrival was delayed by Spain’s progression to the Olympics final, meaning he only had his first training session with his Tottenham teammates the week before the start of the season.

Gil was an unused substitute for 1-0 win against Manchester City last Sunday, but got his first chance to impress when he started the European Conference League match against Portuguese minnows Pacos de Ferreira.

But much like the rest of the side Gil had a disappointing 90 minutes, and was yellow-carded and struggled to make much of an impression during the encounter.

As a result he was dropped back to the bench for the Wolves game and again did not make it on the pitch as Spurs once again won without him.

Of course, it is far too early to judge the 20-year-old, who could well yet go on to become a star in England.

However, Lamela’s stunning form will be a dagger to the heart of Spurs fans – especially given the fact he has already scored two more goals in the league than he managed in the whole of last season.

The fiery midfielder was a firm favourite with supporters, and sent an emotional message on social media when his departure was confirmed.

He posted: “Spurs fans… What can I say? It was a very long journey together, maybe more than I thought, but this club has my heart. I feel the shirt the way you fans feel it.

“Many good memories over the years and I thank my teammates for these years together. I thank the people who work at the club who have always treated me excellently.

“I thank the fans for cheering me on every game, I will miss you all. I will carry this club with me forever.”

It remains to be seen if Gil is given his first Premier League start when Spurs take on Watford at the weekend looking to make it three wins out of three in the division so far.
