Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Borja Baston with the striker undergoing his medical. Sky Sports claim the paperwork is completed ahead of the striker’s move from Swansea to Villa Park. The 27-year-old is undergoing his medical ahead of his move before the 11pm deadline.

Villa will sign Baston on a free transfer, with the midlands club paying his current Swansea contract up until the end of the season.

Dean Smith wanted a new striker heading into the January window following Wesley’s season-ending injury.

Villa signed Mbwana Samatta, however, they wanted another forward to provide competition for places.

Baston, who has scored six times in 20 Championship appearances this season, fits the bill for the Villans.

Baston was at Atletico Madrid while Villa’s current sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch was also in the Spanish capital.

Villa face Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon in a crunch clash which could have a deciding factor on who’s relegated this season.

The Villans are 16th in the Premier League, two points ahead of Bournemouth in 18th.

And Smith has urged his side to put on a performance as they aim to avoid relegation.

He said: “It’s a very big game, but no bigger than the ones against Watford, Brighton and Burnley.

“They’re teams in and around us and that’s where our season will be defined.

“I’m very respectful of Eddie Howe and what he’s done, Bournemouth are an established Premier League team now.

“We’ve got to make sure we’ve got the consistency of our performance. It’s very easily to have the highs of reaching a major cup final in front of 40,000 fans, and then go to a smaller ground.

“We’ve got to make sure there’s no complacency on our part. Bournemouth showed last week against Brighton what they can do if you don’t turn up.

“Our role as a team and a squad is to get out of that bottom group of five. You can only do that by performing and getting results.”
