Timo Werner shares Jurgen Klopp belief over £51m Liverpool transfer despite Man Utd stance | Football | Sport

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner is in agreement with Jurgen Klopp over the prospect of linking up with his fellow German at Liverpool in the summer, according to reports. The striker is the subject of interest from across Europe, including from multiple Premier League clubs.

Express Sport understands Liverpool face competition from Manchester United and Chelsea, while Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona have also been linked with the 23-year-old.

Interest in Werner is soaring as a result of his sensational form this season, having scored 25 goals in 30 matches across all competitions, with 20 in 21 in the Bundesliga.

The Germany international has also produced 10 assists on top of that, having also recorded double figures in both categories in his last two campaigns.

That sees him boast a goalscoring record better than one-in-two while this season he has directly been involved in a goal every 68 minutes this term.

Werner has previously publicly teased a desire to play in the Premier League, calling it “certainly the most interesting” division in Europe with “a certain flair” to it.

And according to this week’s edition of German magazine Sport Bild, the striker believes he would fit in perfectly at Liverpool under Klopp, who he rates as the ideal coach for his talents.

The Reds boss is thought to share that exact same thinking and he’s slated to be highly serious with his interest in the player, who has a £51million (€60m) release clause at the Red Bull Arena.

Bild say the Merseyside club are front of the queue for Werner, despite it being claimed that Manchester United are his favourite English club.

He stated as much when he told Four Four Two back in April 2018: “Yes, playing in the Premier League is a dream for me. I would like to play for two or three clubs, and Manchester United are one of those clubs.

“But probably not in the next few years – later, when my English is a little bit better! I’m very comfortable at RB Leipzig, though.

“Manchester United and Liverpool were the teams I watched quite a lot in England.

“They were the two that I’m a little bit a fan of, because they have so much history. When Alex Ferguson was the coach, United won everything and were outstanding.

“In Liverpool it’s also their stadium and the atmosphere. But when I have to decide, I’m more Manchester United than Liverpool.

“I’m now at a point where at some stage in the future I’d like to play in a team that wins titles.”

But his preference for Liverpool is both due to the style of Klopp’s team and also the latter line of his quotes, with the Reds in a far better position to challenge for major honours than their arch-rivals United.

Liverpool are the current champions of Europe, and are among the favourites to win the Champions League again this season, while they are closing in on a first league title since 1990.

As a result of their 22-point lead on Manchester City, they need just six wins to confirm themselves as Premier League champions, with 13 games of the campaign still to go.

And that is clearly an attraction for Werner, given he has never won a trophy at club level, although that could change this term with Leipzig sat second, a point off of Bayern Munich, in Germany’s top flight.

Werner, twice crowned Bundesliga Player of the Month this season, is also seeking to break Robert Lewandowski’s dominance atop the goalscoring charts.

The Pole has been crowned the league’s top scorer four times in the last six seasons, including both of the last two, and currently has 22 goals to Werner’s 20.

Liverpool, meanwhile, should have space to fill in attack with Xherdan Shaqiri likely to depart this summer.

He has only been at the club since the summer of 2018 but injury issues have limited his impact this term and Liverpool are prepared to sell him for £25m after rejecting loan offers in January.

With Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane also missing a full month of the campaign, if not more, due to the Africa Cup of Nations across January and February of 2021, Liverpool will need forwards to step up in their absence, with Werner possibly one of those.
