Gary Neville explains how Man Utd need to copy Liverpool in the transfer market this year | Football | Sport

Gary Neville has urged Manchester United to make one more elite signing to get the club back to the top. Neville thinks United need to look at how Liverpool built their title winning side and thinks the signings of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson are the perfect example of smart recruitment.

Liverpool claimed their first Premier League title last week and Neville thinks United should consider copying their model in the transfer market.

Neville was asked what it would take for United to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City.

“I think one more signing,” Neville told Premier League Daily.

“You think about Liverpool signing [Virgil] Van Dijk and Alisson in goal.

“One or two more signings or [Paul] Pogba and one more signing playing to their absolute best. I think United can get closer.”

When asked where in particular, Neville answered: “Centre-back, you look at the impact Van Dijk had.

“Maguire has had a really strong impact but another real strong centre-back.

“They’ve still got to be defensively sound. One more signing and United can challenge.”

United have been heavily linked with Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish for this summer, but Neville’s recommendation of a centre-back will likely add to the names linked.

Kalidou Koulibaly has been talked about a lot in the past despite the £80m signing of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof’s improvements this term.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer however is keen to improve the side.

But he has been warned he may need to raise capital this summer if he wants to spend big due to the coronavirus and the financial repercussions on the sporting world.

A deal for Sancho would cost the club over £100m and Ed Woodward has reportedly told Solskjaer to clear players out to help balance the accounts.

Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Andreas Pereira are the top candidates to be sold if they can find buyers.

Smalling is likely to join Roma but United have rejected Inter’s bid to extend Sanchez’ loan deal so he doesn’t help the Italians beat them in the Europa League.

However despite Neville thinking United could be battling the top dogs with just one or two signings, the Match of the Day crew think it would take more than that.
