Premier League football fans experienced all the highs and lows of top-flight action on Sunday as the 2019/20 campaign drew to a close. Liverpool hammered home their superiority with a champions’ performance as they beat Newcastle 3-1 at St James’ Park.

Runners-up Manchester City, meanwhile, overcame relegated Norwich 5-0 – but had VAR to thank for ensuring they kept the clean sheet which secured Ederson’s Golden Glove.

Onel Hernandez’s early opener for the Daniel Farke’s side was ruled out after he was judged to have strayed offside at the Etihad.

It was an otherwise reasonably quiet day for VAR, with just a disallowed Jay Rodriguez equaliser preventing Burnley from snatching a point off Brighton.

VAR has undoubtedly had an impact on fans’ emotions over the course of the season and Express Sport are on hand to reveal how the table would look if the extra official hadn’t been in place each week.

Liverpool – as expected – would still be Premier League title-winners but the gap between Jurgen Klopp’s men and Pep Guardiola’s City would be smaller.

The Reds would have had five points fewer than the 99 they really amassed in 2019/20, while City would have six more if VAR wasn’t around.

Manchester United, meanwhile, would slip a place lower to fourth, with Chelsea leapfrogging them to take third behind the north-west pace-setters.

Wolves would have been the biggest benefactors of there being no VAR in the Premier League as they’d have gained seven more points and booked a guaranteed place in the Europa League along with it.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side would have leaped over Leicester and Tottenham, who would drop down to sixth and 10th respectively.
