Jamie Carragher has taken aim at the Premier League and Football Association over the new handball rule, after Tottenham conceded a last-minute penalty against Newcastle. Spurs looked to be heading for a 1-0 win before VAR flagged up a handball from Eric Dier.

Newcastle striker Andy Carroll headed the ball down onto the arm of the Tottenham defender, who had his back to goal.

Yet despite being blindsided, the referee was still adamant that the Magpies should be awarded a penalty.

It’s not the first controversial incident of the weekend following Crystal Palace’s 2-1 defeat to Everton on Saturday, where the Eagles felt they should have had a penalty after Dominic Calvert-Lewin handled.

Carragher was in the gantry for the Tottenham vs Newcastle controversy and he took the chance to launch an explosive rant on behalf of all supporters watching at home.

The new handball rule came into place ahead of the 2020/21 season and means referees now remove the degree of intent, if the ball hit an arm in an unnatural position.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho stormed down the tunnel after Callum Wilson dispatched the penalty.

He was evidently furious at the decision but decided not to talk about it with Sky Sports’ Laura Woods after the match.

“I react during the game but the game is finished and I don’t want to speak about it,” he said.

“If I want to give some money away I give to charities, I don’t want to give to the FA. So I don’t want to comment.”

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson decided he was willing to call out the Football Association over the rule, which he claims is killing his personal enjoyment of the game.

“I just don’t understand how we’ve allowed it [the handball] to happen. The Premier League, the referee, the coaches, the managers, the players, I don’t know how we’ve allowed this type of situation, which we have at virtually every match at the moment, to occur because the rules of football are important,” he said.

“Now we have to take on board rules which are being suggested, but are they the right ones to judge handball? For me, they aren’t so I think the whole thing is a nonsense.”

He added: “I just find it very disappointing that the game I love and believe in is being reduced to this level where every week, games are being decided on so-called penalty decisions for handball which aren’t handball.
