Lewis Hamilton F1 news: Mercedes team ‘living in constant fear’ | F1 | Sport

Mercedes technical Director James Allison has revealed how he and his team live in continuous fear ahead of the new Formula 1 season. Bahrain hosts 2021’s curtain raiser on March 28.
The Silver Arrows head into the new season as seven-time champions and are the heavy favourites to win the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship.
No.1 driver Lewis Hamilton also handed Mercedes a boost by committing his future to the team for another year.
But just because Mercedes are seasoned winners doesn’t mean they don’t feel the pressure. And with Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Alpine and Aston Martin all bringing in new drivers, Allison has opened on his constant worries over their car’s speed.
“We exist for one purpose,” he told Essentially Sports.
“And that is to produce a racing car that’s capable of fighting at the front, and hopefully, securing wins and championships.
“At this stage of the year, you hope you’ve done enough work.
“But we’re never certain until the cars are actually on a track, doing it for real.”
He added: “Alongside all that excitement is the fear and that fear nagging away continuously at you.
“The moment you open your eyes in the morning, all the way through the day until you go to bed at night, the fear that you haven’t done enough.”
News of Hamilton signing a new one-year contract will come as a relief to Allison as the Brit searches for a record eighth championship.
Currently level with Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher, the 36-year-old has the chance to stand alone as the greatest F1 driver of all time.
And upon the announcement of the deal, Hamilton claimed he is looking to build on their past successes.
“I am excited to be heading into my ninth season with my Mercedes team-mates,” he said.
“Our team has achieved incredible things together and we look forward to building on our success even further, while continuously looking to improve, both on and off the track.
“I’m equally determined to continue the journey we started to make motorsport more diverse for future generations and I am grateful that Mercedes has been extremely supportive of my call to address this issue. I’m proud to say we are taking that effort further this year by launching a foundation dedicated to diversity and inclusion in the sport.
“I am inspired by all that we can build together and can’t wait to get back on the track in March.”
