Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are set to go head-to-head as they fight for pole position at the Portuguese Grand Prix. Mercedes were the quickest during Friday’s practice sessions with Valtteri Bottas coming out on top in FP1 and Hamilton edging FP2.

Hamilton refused claims that the Silver Arrows were stronger after the first day out on the Portuguese track.

“I think it’ll be a close one this weekend,” the seven-time world champion said. “I don’t know what Max’s lap was like in FP2 but mine wasn’t perfect so we definitely have some time to come from the car and improvements to make.

“But I’m sure Red Bull have too. It was close, as it has been the last couple of races, so I’m sure it’ll be an exciting qualifying and race in store.”

Hamilton was right to speak of Red Bull’s pace as Verstappen set the fastest lap in FP3.
