Man Utd transfer news: Reds may be forced into rethink by Raphael Varane and Pau Torres | Football | Sport

It was one of the most memorable days in European Championships history as a total of 14 goals were scored between Monday’s last-16 matches. Manchester United fans would have been keeping a close eye on Raphael Varane and Pau Torres, but both men failed to impress.

Manchester United could be forced into a transfer rethink after Raphael Varane and Pau Torres both produced shaky performances at Euro 2020.

Playing for France and Spain respectively, the pair were supposed to deliver routine victories on their path to meeting in the quarter-finals.

But favourites France crashed out in the round of 16 on penalties at the hands of Switzerland, while Spain edged through earlier thanks to scoring twice in extra-time in their 5-3 thriller against Croatia.

Real Madrid star Varane, who has been linked with an £80million switch to Old Trafford this summer, made a clumsy challenge that led to a Swiss penalty, while he looked far less assured than he has in previous games.

Meanwhile, Torres was being rested by Spain boss Luis Enrique, but was brought on for the final stages of the game to sure things up at the back.

However, that decision completely backfired with Croatia scoring twice in the final five minutes, and Torres playing far from his best.

The pair’s performances may force United into rethinking the big-money moves they may have been planning for the La Liga duo, who seemed to crumble when the pressure was on.

United fans shared their concerns on Twitter about Villarreal centre-back Torres, who had looked far more comfortable in the group stage.

Meanwhile, former France and Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf urged Varane to rethink his decision to join United, should he be leaning towards an exit from Real to Old Trafford.

“We know the history of Man United but we are talking about the past,” he told ESPN FC (via The Sport Review).

“They finished in second place in the league but I’m not sure it’s a goal for everyone to go to Manchester United now unless they have three or four new signings coming in as well so they can challenge Manchester City and Liverpool next season.

“I don’t know what Raphael Varane’s goal is but I’d have some questions before going to Manchester United.”
