Arsenal’s West Brom thrashing suggests Mikel Arteta could have three resurgent players | Football | Sport

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

When Arsenal gave Aubameyang a bumper new contract last year, they believed they were onto a winner.

After all, having seen the Gabon international fire them to FA Cup glory, why wouldn’t they?

However, Aubameyang toiled last season – scoring just 15 goals – down 14 from the previous campaign.

In the time since, his stock has fallen.

Some have even suggested Arsenal would be wise to offload the player, with Barcelona showing interest as they plan for life without Lionel Messi.

But this treble will have done Aubameyang the world of good.

He missed the Brentford match because of coronavirus, while he was only deemed ready enough for a place on the bench for the weekend’s defeat to Chelsea.

But if Arsenal can get Aubameyang playing like this, their faith in the 32-year-old will have been vindicated.

The best strikers need goals to boost their confidence. Droughts merely hamper it.

And Aubameyang’s clinical finishing against West Brom suggests he isn’t done yet, despite some writing him off as finished.
