Paul Pogba insists the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo will raise the bar and turn Manchester United into Premier League champions. United stretched their unbeaten away run to a record 28 games after Mason Greenwood’s strike delivered victory over Wolves and lifted them to third in the table.

But it was the arrival of five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo which has got not just the supporters who chanted his name at Molineux, but the United dressing room, buzzing.

“Everyone knows he’s already a legend at this club to have him back is huge, he’ll bring his experience, quality and when he comes the level goes up,” said Pogba after United defeated Wolves.

“We’re pleased that he’s coming, the most important today was the win and when he comes we keep this mentality.”

Goalkeeper David De Gea insisted United are all set to go one better than last season’s runner-up spot.

“It’s good to win, but now it’s time to play for titles,” he said. “Records are okay, but you have to go for titles.

“Hopefully Cristiano can bring something special as well to make the team even better.”

United are not quite there with the Ronaldo deal but expect the final details to be hammered out this week.

The club hope he will return from international duty with Bruno Fernandes and could go straight into the side against Newcastle on September 11.

Ole Gunnar Solskjer declared: “He’s not signed to sit on the bench. He’s going to make us a better team.

“Thirty minutes into the first half, we have a good transition for us, same place and [Nelson] Semedo put the ball out because Pogba told him to,” he said.

“On 80 minutes, [Fernando] Marcal said to the guy who scored the goal [Greenwood] to put the ball out and they shoot at goal. Ruben was down and they scored the goal.”

After facing Newcastle, United get their Champions League group stage campaign started away in Switzerland against Young Boys on September 14.

They follow that up with back-to-back fixtures against West Ham, away in the league and at home in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

A top-flight clash with Aston Villa and a European Cup reunion with Europa League final conquerors Villarreal rounds out September for the Red Devils.
