Sven-Goran Eriksson will once again manage England, but this time in charge of the team for Soccer Aid 2021. The game will take place at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium on Saturday 4 September, with kick-off scheduled for 7.30pm. It will also be shown live on ITV. Coverage begins at 6.30pm, with the broadcast presented by Dermot O’Leary and Alex Scott.

Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville are among the stars who will line up for England under the man who managed them between 2001 and 2006.

In fact, Rooney was the subject of a huge row while he played for both Eriksson and Sir Alex Ferguson for England and Manchester United respectively.

Rooney suffered a horrific fractured metatarsal prior to the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but was nonetheless included in Eriksson’s squad for the upcoming tournament.

This angered Ferguson, and Eriksson revealed in 2019 that the Scottish manager was livid over the phone.

He said: “With Alex, the amazing thing was it was seven o’clock in the morning or earlier. Always. When he was angry,” Eriksson told The Sunday Times.

“And never ‘Hello Sven, how are you?’ It was “whuurssshhhh” [yelling]. I thought he should kill me.

“He said, ‘I will kill you. You are finished’. But I represented England and you have to stand up.

“What’s right is right and what’s wrong is wrong and when you say ‘Don’t pick Rooney because I’m going to kill you’ . . . I said, ‘F*** off, what’s going on with you?’

“And he was screaming. Whenever he got like that . . . it has no meaning.

In 2020, Eriksson admitted that “maybe I made a mistake” when he decided to leave Italy for the England job.

He said: “A few times I thought to myself it might’ve been better to stay at Lazio and in Italy. But when an offer from the England team comes along, that’s once in a lifetime.

“I thought that I couldn’t say no and would’ve regretted it for the rest of my life if I had turned it down.”
