No Time To Die is the Star Wars The Last Jedi of James Bond movies: 007 fans will polarise | Films | Entertainment

[ad_1]

Four years ago, the second movie of the Star Wars sequel trilogy was released in Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. Following JJ Abrams’ safe rehash of A New Hope in The Force Awakens, Rian Johnson flipped the franchise on its head with his narrative decisions. While critics lauded the new Star Wars movie, some fans absolutely hated it.

To this day The Last Jedi is hailed as both the best and worst Star Wars movie by different fans.

But could the same be about to happen with Daniel Craig’s final James Bond movie No Time To Die?

Having seen the new 007 blockbuster at the world premiere, Express.co.uk believes the movie will polarize fans.

The first reviews reported a showering of five stars, which is true in some cases, but in reality, the reaction from critics has been decidedly mixed.

A quick look at Rotten Tomatoes reveals there’s a host of four and three star reviews too, with Express.co.uk joining the latter.

To explain why No Time To Die will polarize 007 fans we’re going to have to jump into spoilers.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD FOR NO TIME TO DIE. The first thing to say is that Craig’s swan song is just as tonally confused, if not more so, as its predecessor Spectre.

Craig’s Bond era began gritty and serious, more Batman Begins and Bourne than Roger Moore camp.

Some will find this a refreshing character development while others might see the change as somewhat inconsistent with what came before.

Then there are the gadgets. We’re back into Die Another Day invisible car territory here with the nanobot DNA plot. To add to this there is not one but four Aston Martin cars from the 60s, 80s, 00s and 20s all in the same movie.

A fan service dream with a sillier spy plot closer to Mission: Impossible or an overblown and over the top self-indulgence? The fans will disagree.

Aside from the fact Safin wasn’t Dr No – a disappointment for many – and therefore not as big a baddie as Blofeld who cameos, the very ending of No Time To Die will be the most divisive part for 007 fans.

James Bond actually dies for real. Not in a pretend way like You Only Live Twice and Skyfall, but is totally annihilated.

Again, some will find this a bold and satisfying end to Craig’s time as Bond with a move that the franchise has never made before.

However, for others, this will be too much. For some fans, Bond cannot die. And in one sense he won’t as the end of the credits promise that “James Bond Will Return” in another form, in another universe with another actor.

Give it a year and no doubt No Time To Die will come top and bottom of rival Bond movie rankings.
