Man Utd new boy hailed

Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp has drawn a parallel between new Manchester United signing Bruno Fernandes and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

“He’s a very, very talented player,” Redknapp told the Sky Sports Football Weekend Preview podcast. “I saw him last summer in the Nations League and I was very impressed with him.

“He got 20-odd goals from midfield last season and he’s got an unbelievable strike from distance. If you look at his numbers they’re amazing.

“Frank Lampard is the best I’ve ever seen for scoring goals from midfield but this guy is doing it as well.”

Chelsea exit confirmed

Chelsea coach Eddie Newton is leaving Stamford Bridge to take up a position at Turkish side Trabzonspor, he has revealed on Instagram.

Newton wrote: “Today I’m writing this message with mixed emotions, I’m leaving Chelsea for a new venture which leaves me in a state of sadness and excitement.

“Sadness because I’m leaving the club where I have lived most of my life, you have taught me how to become a player, a coach and a man.

“I would like to thank everyone at Chelsea the board, all the staff for your support in helping me develop over the years, also to the players and fans you have all become my second family to me and I will never forget all the great memories that we have created and shared together.

“However I have been offered a fantastic opportunity that I couldn’t turn down. Opportunities like this come very rarely and I feel it’s time that I test my self in another environment.

“Excited because of my new venture in Turkey with Trabzonspor, this is truly a club with intelligent ambition to build the club structures, not only for the immediate future but beyond, this is an exciting time for Trabzonspor, I believe timing is everything in life and I believe this is a great time to be joining this club and I am looking forward to the challenge of the Super Lig along side Huseyin Ciimsir.”

Aston Villa rejected striker deal

Manchester United new boy Odion Ighalo was touted to Aston Villa just 24 hours before he sealed a switched to Old Trafford, it has been revealed.

Sky Sports News presenter Jim White says the Villans were handed the opportunity to loan in the striker, but rejected him.

White said: “I’m learning that Aston Villa turned down the chance to sign Odion Ighalo last night.”

Ighalo will be hoping to rediscover the form which saw him score 15 goals in 37 Premier League appearances for Watford during the 2015/16 season.

Arsenal loan swoop explained

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has lifted the lid on why the Gunners made Pablo Mari their only centre-back signing of the January transfer window.

“For me, it’s very important,” Arteta said. “He balances what I want to do from the back line, he gives more options, more solutions, he opens up the pitch more. Again, he’s a player that we’ve been following for the last few months. We are really happy to have him.

“We’ve been trying to be active in the market to resolve some of the issues we’ve been going through in the last few weeks. We found two players [Mari and right-back Cedric Soares] that we believe can be very useful and improve our squad, obviously with the resources we had as a club. We are happy with what we’ve done.

“I am happy for two reasons. We believed that we couldn’t strengthen the team a little bit in some areas with the financial situation that we have, but as well, four weeks ago I was very concerned with some of the departures and we’ve been able to manage that so far.”

Man Utd’s Ighalo transfer explained

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lifted the lid on why the Red Devils turned to Odion Ighalo on transfer deadline day after missing out on their preferred targets.

The Nigeria international has linked up with United on a six-month loan deal, which does not include an option to make the move permanent.

Solskjaer said: “Odion is an experienced player. He will come in and give us an option of a different type of centre-forward for the short spell he’s staying with us. A great lad and very professional, he will make the most of his time here.”

Ighalo’s switch fulfils a boyhood dream for the striker, who grew up supporting United and idolised Old Trafford legends Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke.

Liverpool boss on Salah’s future

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has dampened Real Madrid and Barcelona’s hopes of prising Mohamed Salah away by insisting the Egyptian is happy at Anfield.

Asked if Salah will stay beyond the summer, Klopp said: “I would think so, did you hear something different? How can you see the hunger to stay at Liverpool? It looks to me like he is really settled to be honest.

“I have no idea, actually, but you could ask me the same question for all the others and I have no idea. I didn’t think about it until [the press] asked me.

“As long as I don’t hear anything and I don’t ask the players what they think of next season or in two years, for me, it looks like [he will stay]. How long is his contract? Long? I would [think so] yes, but I have no idea.”

Chelsea wanted four signings

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard failed with four moves to bolster his attack in the January transfer window as the Blues were left without any winter additions.

The Independent report Chelsea targeted Edinson Cavani, Dries Martens, Jadon Sancho and Timo Werner, but they were rebuffed for the respective Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig forwards.

Express Sport understands Sancho and Werner are, though, long-term targets of Lampard and he is likely to reignite his interest in them in the summer.

Chelsea will have more than £150m to spend on fresh talent when the transfer market reopens having failed to spend a penny last month.
