Transfer window
Premier League clubs agreed on Thursday to move the last day of the close-season transfer window back to the end of August or early September, in line with Europe’s top leagues.
Premier League clubs voted in favour of changing the transfer window in 2017, bringing deadline day forward to before the start of the season the following year.
European clubs continued to trade for three weeks longer, leading several managers, including Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, to complain that the move had handed rivals an undue advantage.
Under the system last year, Premier League clubs were barred from recruiting from August 9 but could still lose players to European rivals until September 2.
The decision to return to the old system was taken at a shareholders meeting. Accordingly, the next transfer window will close at 5pm on September 1 because August 31 is a UK bank holiday.
Jadon Sancho gamble
Steve McManaman has urged Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp not to break the bank for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.
Over the last few months, the England international has been linked with a mega-money move to Anfield with some reporting his valuation at £126million.
That’s £50m more than the club’s current record signing of £76m spent on Virgil van Dijk and McManaman doesn’t think it’s necessary.
“I think he’d prefer to go somewhere where he will start week-in and week-out,” the former Liverpool midfielder said of Sancho during an interview with HorserRacing.net. “I don’t think there’s any problem with that.
“The other thing is the cost implications. How much is he going to cost? It’s a big outlay for a player and in all honesty, Liverpool’s young players are all doing well themselves and Jurgen Klopp seems to want to give them a go.”
Ricky-Jade Jones snub
Peterborough United rejected multiple approaches for teenage striker Ricky-Jade Jones.
That’s according to the League One club’s director of football Barry Fry, who claims Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Leeds were trying to sign the 17-year-old.
“We had more clubs interested in Ricky in January than we did in Ivan Toney,” Fry told the Peterborough Telegraph. “They were all after him. United, Liverpool, Arsenal, but we told them all the same thing and that it was a waste of time bidding as we were determined to hold on to him.
“Leeds were actually the most determined to sign Ricky. They were on several times as they think Ricky is going to be the next Tammy Abraham. I told them if that’s the case he must be worth £15 million already!”
