That wouldn’t be the case the next time the Swiss served, though, as she continued to struggle with the speed of Raducanu’s returns from the back of the court and the Briton won a tense game which went to deuce.

Raducanu closed out the game by eventually winning her seventh match point in a tense final game to set up a second round clash with world number 49 Shuai Zhang of China, who also won her opening match against Hailey Baptiste in straight sets.
